Mexico Car Insurance for RVs, Trucks, and SUVs

Driving an RV, truck, or SUV into Mexico? Learn how Mexican auto insurance works for larger vehicles, why towing coverage matters, and how to get the right policy.

Mexican auto insurance is not one size fits all. If you are driving an RV, a pickup truck, or a larger SUV across the border, your coverage needs are different from someone in a compact car. Higher vehicle values, towed trailers, and specialized use all affect the policy you need.

Here is what owners of larger vehicles should know before driving into Mexico.

Why Larger Vehicles Need Special Attention

RVs, trucks, and full-size SUVs are typically worth more than a standard passenger car, and they may be carrying valuable equipment or towing additional vehicles. Because Mexican auto insurance coverage is tied to the value of what you are insuring, it is important to make sure your policy reflects the true value of your vehicle and anything attached to it.

Underinsuring a high-value vehicle means that in the event of a serious accident or theft, your payout may fall well short of what it costs to repair or replace. Getting the coverage right from the start protects your investment.

Insurance for RVs and Motorhomes

RVs and motorhomes need a policy that accounts for both the vehicle and its contents. Key considerations include:

  1. Accurate vehicle value. RVs hold significant value. Make sure your policy reflects the current market value so you are fully covered.
  2. Contents and equipment. Motorhomes often carry appliances, furnishings, and personal property. Ask about how the policy treats contents.
  3. Towed vehicles. Many RV travelers tow a car behind the motorhome. A towed vehicle needs its own coverage. Make sure both are insured.
  4. Full coverage protection. For a high-value RV, Maximum Coverage that includes collision, theft, and rollover is strongly recommended over basic liability.

Insurance for Trucks and Pickups

Pickup trucks are among the most common vehicles crossing into Baja, whether for recreation, hauling, or towing. When insuring a truck, consider:

Towing coverage. If you are towing a boat, trailer, ATV, or another vehicle, that trailer or load needs to be listed and covered. A towed unit is not automatically insured under the truck’s policy.

Vehicle value. Newer trucks carry high values. Confirm your policy reflects the actual worth of the vehicle.

Cargo and equipment. If you are carrying valuable equipment, ask how the policy treats it.

Insurance for SUVs

Full-size SUVs are popular family vehicles for trips into Baja. They are generally insured much like passenger cars, but because many SUVs carry higher values, it is worth confirming that your coverage level matches the vehicle. Families traveling with an SUV full of passengers should also pay attention to the medical payments portion of the policy, which covers occupants in the event of an accident.

Towing: A Key Detail Not to Miss

This is the single most overlooked issue for owners of larger vehicles. Whatever you are towing, a trailer, a boat, ATVs, or a second vehicle, it must be specifically included in your insurance policy. A towed unit is treated separately and is not covered just because the towing vehicle is insured.

When getting a quote, always mention everything you will be towing so the policy can be set up correctly. This ensures every part of your setup is protected if something goes wrong.

Liability vs Full Coverage for Larger Vehicles

While basic liability coverage may be enough for an older, low-value car, it is rarely the right choice for an RV, newer truck, or high-value SUV. Maximum Coverage adds protection for your own vehicle, including collision, theft, and rollover. Given how much these vehicles are worth, full coverage is almost always the smarter choice.
