If you’re shopping for Mexican auto insurance, the first decision you’ll need to make is what level of coverage to buy. The two main options are liability only and full coverage (also called Maximum Coverage). The right choice depends on your vehicle, where you’re going, and how much risk you’re comfortable taking on.
Here’s what each policy covers and how to decide which one is right for your trip.
What Is Liability Only Coverage?
Liability only coverage is the minimum required to legally drive in Mexico. It covers your legal responsibility if you cause an accident, including damage you do to other people, their vehicles, and their property.
ย
A liability only policy includes:
- Bodily injury liability. Pays for medical expenses for the other party if you’re at fault in an accident.
ย
- Property damage liability. Pays to repair or replace the other person’s vehicle or property.
ย
- Legal assistance. Provides bilingual legal support if you’re detained or involved in a serious accident, since Mexican law treats traffic accidents as criminal matters.
ย
- Medical payments. Covers basic medical costs for you and your passengers up to the policy limit.
ย
What liability only does NOT cover is damage to your own vehicle. If you crash your own car, hit a pothole, or your car gets stolen, none of that is covered.
What Is Maximum Coverage (Full Coverage)?
Maximum Coverage includes everything in a liability policy, plus protection for your own vehicle. This is the more comprehensive option and the one most travelers should consider if their vehicle has any meaningful value.
ย
A Maximum Coverage policy adds:
- Collision coverage. Pays to repair or replace your vehicle if you’re in an accident, regardless of who’s at fault.
ย
- Theft coverage. Covers your vehicle if it’s stolen, including partial theft like break-ins or stolen parts.
ย
- Rollover and total loss. Protects your vehicle from non-collision damage like a rollover or being declared a total loss.
ย
- Roadside assistance. Includes towing, flat tire help, fuel delivery, and emergency support throughout Mexico.
ย
- Higher medical limits. Increased coverage for you and your passengers, including ambulance and hospital expenses.
Side by Side Comparison
- Damage to other people’s property: Both plans cover this.
- Bodily injury to others: Both plans cover this.
- Damage to your own vehicle: Only Maximum Coverage covers this.
- Theft of your vehicle: Only Maximum Coverage covers this.
- Roadside assistance: Typically only included in Maximum Coverage.
- Legal assistance: Both plans include this.
- Cost: Liability only is significantly less expensive than Maximum Coverage.
Which One Should You Buy?
The right choice comes down to a few key questions about your vehicle and trip.
ย
Choose Liability Only if:ย
- You’re driving an older, lower-value vehicle. If your car is paid off and worth less than a few thousand dollars, the cost of full coverage may not be worth it.
ย
- You’re taking a short trip close to the border. A quick day trip to Tijuana or Rosarito carries less risk than a multi-day road trip deeper into Mexico.
ย
- You’re comfortable accepting the risk. If you can afford to repair or replace your vehicle out of pocket, liability only saves you money.
ย
Choose Maximum Coverage if:ย
- Your vehicle is newer or financed. If you have a loan on your car, your lender almost always requires full coverage. Even if not, a newer vehicle is too expensive to risk.
ย
- You’re traveling deeper into Mexico. Trips to Ensenada, Valle de Guadalupe, La Paz, or other destinations beyond the immediate border zone increase your risk exposure.
ย
- You want peace of mind. Knowing your vehicle is protected against theft, collision, and accidents lets you actually enjoy the trip without worrying about every parking lot or pothole.
ย
- You’re driving an RV, truck, or specialty vehicle. Higher value vehicles benefit significantly more from full coverage.
Common Misconceptions
“My US insurance covers me in Mexico.” It does not. Even if your US policy mentions Mexico, it almost never satisfies Mexican legal requirements. You need a policy issued by a Mexican insurance company.
ย
“I only need insurance if I’m driving far into Mexico.” Mexican law requires valid Mexican insurance the moment you cross the border, even for a quick lunch in Tijuana.
ย
“Liability only is enough because I’m a careful driver.” Even careful drivers get hit by other drivers, deal with theft, or encounter unexpected road hazards. Liability protects others, not you.
ย
“Full coverage is too expensive for a short trip.” Daily Maximum Coverage policies often cost only a few dollars more per day than liability. For most travelers, the difference is well worth it.
