Frequently Asked Questions About Mexican Auto Insurance

Planning a trip to Mexico? Here are answers to the most common questions about Baja Mexico insurance, border crossing requirements, coverage details, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Yes, and hereโ€™s why. While Mexican auto insurance is technically not mandatory to cross the border, it is required on all federal highways, toll roads, and bridges in Mexico. Since 2012, the state of Baja California has also required all drivers to carry liability coverage from a Mexican-licensed insurer.

More importantly, Mexicoโ€™s legal system operates under the Napoleonic Code, where you are considered at fault in an accident until proven otherwise. If youโ€™re involved in an accident without insurance, you face two options: pay for all damages in cash on the spot, or risk being detained until financial responsibility is established. For the vast majority of travelers, purchasing Baja Mexico auto insurance before crossing the border is the only practical and safe choice.

Generally, no. While some US and Canadian policies may extend limited coverage to border areas, this coverage is almost always restricted in critical ways. It may only apply within 25 miles of the border, may exclude liability, and typically has short time limits. Most importantly, your US insurer cannot adjust or settle a claim inside Mexico and does not provide the legal assistance that is essential under Mexicoโ€™s legal system.

Even if your US policy mentions Mexico coverage, it is not accepted as proof of financial responsibility under Mexican law. We recommend purchasing a separate Mexican policy for every trip.

If you are involved in an accident without insurance in Mexico, you may be detained by authorities until you can demonstrate financial responsibility. Under Mexicoโ€™s Napoleonic Code, traffic accidents involving property damage or bodily injury are treated as both criminal and civil matters. Without a valid Mexican insurance policy, you would need to pay for all damages in cash immediately. This could amount to thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars depending on the severity of the accident.

Yes. Baja-Mex operates 16 locations at the San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, and Tecate border crossings where you can purchase a policy in person, including drive-through service at select locations. However, we recommend purchasing your policy online before your trip so youโ€™re covered from the moment you cross. Our online quote and purchase process takes less than two minutes.

Yes. Since January 2012, the state of Baja California has required all drivers to carry third-party liability coverage issued by a Mexican insurance company. This applies even if you are only driving in the immediate border towns. Additionally, Mexican auto insurance is required on all federal highways and toll roads throughout Mexico.

Baja-Mex offers two coverage levels. Liability only includes a $100,000 USD Combined Single Limit for property damage and bodily injury, medical expenses ($5,000 per person, $25,000 per accident), and legal assistance with bail bond. Full coverage includes everything in the liability plan plus collision, overturning, and glass breakage ($500 deductible), fire, theft, vandalism, and natural disasters ($1,000 deductible). Both plans include 24/7 bilingual claims support and roadside assistance.

Yes. Every Baja-Mex policy, both liability and full coverage, includes legal defense, attorney fees, court costs, and bail bond at no additional charge. This is one of the most important components of Mexican auto insurance. Under Mexicoโ€™s Napoleonic Code legal system, you may be detained after an accident until financial and legal responsibility is established. Having legal assistance included in your policy means you have representation from the moment an incident occurs.

Yes. All Baja-Mex policies include roadside assistance throughout Mexico. If your vehicle breaks down, you can call our 24/7 bilingual hotline for help. Services typically include towing, battery jump-starts, flat tire assistance, and lockout service.

Yes. Both liability and full coverage policies include medical expense coverage for you and your passengers. Coverage provides up to $5,000 per person and up to $25,000 per accident. This covers medical treatment resulting from a covered accident, regardless of who was at fault.

No. Your Mexican auto insurance policy is void if your vehicle is driven off maintained roads. This includes beaches, sand dunes, dirt trails, and any unpaved surface that is not a recognized roadway. If you have an accident while driving off-road, your claim will be denied. Plan your routes accordingly and stick to paved or officially maintained roads.

Yes, but both your primary vehicle and the towed vehicle or trailer must be declared on your policy with the appropriate premium. If you are towing and have not declared the towed vehicle, your policy is void for both vehicles. During the online purchase process, you will be asked for the value of your towed vehicle separately from your primary vehicle.

The cost of your Baja Mexico car insurance depends on your vehicleโ€™s value, the coverage level you choose (liability or full), the length of your trip, and whether youโ€™re traveling only in Baja or into mainland Mexico. Policies are available from a single day up to a full year. Generally, daily rates are most affordable for short trips, while annual policies offer the best per-day value for frequent travelers. If your travel is limited to the Baja California peninsula, you may qualify for up to 20% savings on your premium.

For a precise quote based on your trip, use our online quote tool at bajamexinsurance.com/auto-insurance-quote. It takes less than two minutes and thereโ€™s no obligation.

Yes. Baja-Mex offers policies starting at just 24 hours. Policies are sold in 24-hour increments from the time you enter Mexico. For example, if you cross the border at 10:00 AM on Saturday and return by 8:00 PM the same day, a one-day policy covers your entire trip.

Yes. If your travel is limited to the Baja California peninsula (Baja California and Baja California Sur), you may save up to 20% on your premium compared to policies that cover all of Mexico. This discount applies because the risk profile for Baja-only travel is lower. The discount is applied automatically during the quote process based on your travel destination.

Yes. If you return from Mexico earlier than planned, you may be eligible for a refund on unused coverage days. To request a refund, return the original policy documents to any Baja-Mex location. The refund is calculated from the date you physically return the policy or the postmarked date if you mail it in.

When you purchase online, your policy documents are delivered immediately via email. You can print them or save them to your phone. If you purchase in person at one of our locations, youโ€™ll receive printed documents on the spot. We recommend keeping a printed copy in your vehicle at all times while driving in Mexico.

Stay at the scene and call the 24/7 claims hotline number provided with your policy. Bilingual representatives are available around the clock. An insurance adjuster from GNP Seguros will be dispatched to the accident scene to document damage, negotiate with the other party, and handle the claims process. Your policy includes legal representation, so an attorney can be engaged immediately if needed. Do not leave Mexico without first reporting your claim. Failure to report before returning to the US may result in claim denial.

Yes. Claims on Baja-Mex policies are settled in US dollars. Vehicle repairs can be completed in the United States, Canada, or Mexicoโ€”whichever is most convenient for you. This is a significant advantage of purchasing through Baja-Mex and our underwriter GNP Seguros.

All Baja-Mex policies are underwritten by Grupo Nacional Provincial, S.A. (GNP Seguros). GNP is Mexicoโ€™s largest insurance company for both tourist and domestic coverage, and part of Grupo BAL, one of the largest business conglomerates in Mexico. They have been in continuous operation since 1901. When you purchase a policy through Baja-Mex, your coverage is backed by over 120 years of financial strength and claims-handling expertise.

For air travel, you need a valid US passport book. For land and sea crossings, US citizens can use a passport book, passport card, or a WHTI-compliant document such as a state-issued enhanced driverโ€™s license, NEXUS card, or SENTRI card. US military personnel may use military ID with travel orders. Children under 16 may use a passport, passport card, or their original or certified birth certificate.

We recommend carrying a passport book or passport card for the smoothest border crossing experience, both entering Mexico and returning to the United States.

No. Vehicles traveling within the Baja California peninsula (including Baja California and Baja California Sur) do not require a Temporary Vehicle Import Permit (TIP). However, if you plan to cross to mainland Mexico by ferry, you will need to obtain a vehicle permit at the ferry embarkation location. If you plan to drive into mainland Mexico through a land border crossing, you will need to obtain the permit at a Banjercito office at the border. Your vehicle registration and, if applicable, a letter from your lienholder authorizing the vehicle to cross into Mexico, will be required.

Baja-Mex operates 16 locations across three border crossing areas in Southern California. We have locations in San Ysidro (our largest presence, with multiple offices along San Ysidro Boulevard and Camino de la Plaza), Otay Mesa (offices on Roll Drive and Otay Mesa Road), and Tecate (on Tecate Road, adjacent to the border crossing). Many of our locations are open extended hours, and select locations offer drive-through service. Visit bajamexinsurance.com/all-locations for addresses, hours, and services available at each location.

Yes. Baja-Mex operates one of the largest currency exchange operations in the San Diego/Tijuana area. We offer competitive, commission-free exchange rates for US dollars to Mexican pesos (and Euros) at all of our locations. Rates are updated multiple times daily to reflect current market conditions. When you return from your trip, you can sell back unused pesos at any Baja-Mex location. Drive-through currency exchange is available at select locations for added convenience.
