Dia de los Muertos falls on November 1 and 2 every year. In 2026 that is a Sunday and a Monday, which makes the weekend of October 31 to November 2 one of the best three-day windows to be in Baja. Tijuana, Ensenada, Rosarito, and Tecate all put on altars, parades, and food events, and they are close enough to the border to do in a day or a weekend. Here is where to go and how to handle the crossing.
What Dia de los Muertos is, briefly
It is not Mexican Halloween. Dia de los Muertos is a celebration of family members who have died, with ofrendas (altars) built at home and in public spaces, decorated with marigolds, candles, photos, pan de muerto, and the favorite foods and drinks of the people being remembered. November 1 traditionally honors children, November 2 adults. It is festive, not somber, and visitors are welcome at the public events.
Tijuana
The biggest concentration of events is in Tijuana, and most are within a short cab ride of the San Ysidro crossing.
- Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT): The city’s main cultural center hosts an altar exhibition every year, usually with dozens of ofrendas from schools, families, and artists, plus music and workshops.
- Avenida Revolucion and Pasaje Rodriguez: Street altars, face painting, and Catrina parades along the main tourist corridor, typically the evening of November 1 and 2.
- Mercado Hidalgo: The best place to buy marigolds, sugar skulls, and pan de muerto if you are building your own altar.
- Panteon (cemeteries): Families gather at gravesites, especially on the evening of November 2. Visitors should be respectful; this is the heart of the holiday.
Ensenada
Ensenada’s celebration centers on the waterfront and downtown. Expect altar contests, a Catrina parade along Avenida Ruiz or the malecon, and food stalls. Ensenada is about 90 minutes south of the border on the toll road, so it works as a weekend rather than a day trip.
Rosarito
Rosarito combines Halloween and Dia de los Muertos into a long weekend of altars on Boulevard Benito Juarez, hotel events, and a beach that is still warm enough to enjoy in early November. Our Rosarito drive guide has the route and what to do.
Tecate
Smaller and calmer. Tecate’s Parque Miguel Hidalgo in the town center hosts community altars and music. It is a good choice if you want the holiday without the crowds, and the Tecate border crossing is the easiest of the three for a same-day return.
Border timing for the weekend
Southbound: Friday October 30 and Saturday October 31 afternoons will be busy at San Ysidro. Cross before noon or use Otay Mesa or Tecate.
Northbound: The long lines come Sunday November 1 and Monday November 2, when day visitors and weekenders return at the same time. If you are going for the evening events, the smartest move for Tijuana is to park on the US side, walk across, and take a cab. The pedestrian line is usually far shorter than the vehicle line late at night, and you skip the drive-back-after-mezcal problem entirely. Baja-Mex offers secure border parking a block from the San Ysidro pedestrian crossing.
If you are driving to Ensenada or Rosarito, come back Monday morning or Tuesday rather than Sunday night. Check CBP border wait times before you leave, and use the Ready Lane if everyone has a passport card.
What you need
- Passport or passport card for everyone, including kids (birth certificate is fine under 16)
- Mexican auto insurance if you are driving. It is required on the toll road and federal highways, and it is what proves financial responsibility if you are in an accident. A one to three day policy is inexpensive and takes two minutes to buy online. Get a policy for the weekend before you go.
- Pesos for street food, altars, and cabs. Exchange at any Baja-Mex location before crossing; rates on Avenida Revolucion are poor.
- A light jacket for the evening events and comfortable shoes for standing at parades.
Baja-Mex has been at the San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, and Tecate crossings for 51 years. Whether you are driving to Ensenada or walking into Tijuana for the night, we can take care of insurance, pesos, and parking in one stop.
